Dooley also wrote in the memo that was sent to all head football coaches at NCAA member schools and game officials that several members of a team could pray briefly at the conclusion of a play.
``The committee is concerned about reports that it has banned prayer from football,″ Dooley wrote. ``It is not the intent of the Football Rules Committee to prohibit prayer on or off the playing field.″
The NCAA denied that it had backed off enforcing the rule intended to curb in-your-face showboating by players after touchdowns or big plays.
``There is no change in the rule and there is no change in the enforcement. We clarified the rule and explained to them (Liberty) what the interpretation has always been,″ said NCAA spokeswoman Katherine Reith.
