CANBERRA, Australia_ A powerful earthquake stuck Papua New Guinea late Tuesday evening, triggering a tsunami alert for coastal areas up to 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) away. There was no tsunami threat to Hawaii or Guam. SENT: 275 words.

HONOLULU_ The mayor of Honolulu has proposed a trio of tax increases to cover costs of a forthcoming rail line, a report said. SENT: 235 words.
