2 Kentucky Players Suspended

February 18, 2002

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) _ Kentucky sophomore guards Gerald Fitch and Cory Sears were suspended and will not play in Tuesday’s game against Tennessee for ``behavior detrimental to the team,″ Coach Tubby Smith said in a statement Sunday.

A Lexington television station, WTVQ-TV, reported that Fitch and Sears got into a fight on the team plane as the No. 10 Wildcats were returning to Lexington after a 78-69 loss at No. 21 Georgia on Saturday.

Kentucky sports information director Brooks Downing did not immediately return a call on Sunday.

Fitch is Kentucky’s fourth-leading scorer, averaging 9.5 points per game. He scored 17 points in Saturday’s loss, the Wildcats’ third in their last seven games.

Sears is a walk-on who has seen limited action this season and is averaging 0.8 points per game.

Smith was unavailable for further comment Sunday, but had his regular pre-game news conference scheduled for 1:30 p.m. EST on Monday.
