Baraboo shop promotes intimacy

August 10, 2018

Don’t get the wrong idea about You & Me Boutique. It offers the lubricants, lingerie and other intimacy aids customers might associate with an adult novelty store. But owner Stephanie Higgins describes her business as a sexual health and wellness center.

“We focus on keeping the intimacy within relationships — or within yourself,” she said.

Higgins opened the shop off Sauk County Highway BD in October 2016. Last month it expanded, doubling in size and providing space for a boudoir photography studio. A nearby coffee table, couch and chairs provide a home for the store’s Love You More discussion gatherings.

“It’s a place you can vent and talk about things you need to talk about,” Higgins said.

You & Me is located in a building that once housed Cupid’s Lingerie & Gifts. Higgins has created a store that offers some of the items customers might expect from an adult novelty store — she formerly owned one in Oak Creek — but doesn’t sell pornography.

“I liked what I was doing, helping people, but there was such shame behind it,” Higgins said. “There’s such a stigma.”

Her store hosts belly dance classes. She counsels individual customers and couples, helping them work through communication problems that can squelch intimacy. Higgins and her two employees are certified by the Center for Sexual Pleasure and Health.

“Sometimes people just need a third person to talk to each other,” she said.

Over time she has whittled down her inventory, focusing on high-end products. Bath bombs and plus-size lingerie are among customers’ favorites.

“They love the variety,” Higgins said. “I hand-picked what I wanted to carry.”

Customers won’t find X-rated movies or magazines. What they’ll find instead is an intimacy coach.

“I can give really individual attention to everyone that comes in,” Higgins said. “They just appreciate having someone to talk to.”
