Judge: Man must remain jailed in fatal child abuse case
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico man charged in a fatal child abuse investigation must remain jailed as he awaits trial.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports the judge’s decision Wednesday to detain 20-year-old Jordan Nunez followed testimony from 13-year-old victim Jeremiah Valencia’s younger sister.
Authorities say Nunez’s father, Thomas Ferguson, and Jeremiah’s mother lived in Nambe when the boy was killed following months of severe abuse in the household.
All three adults were charged in connection with the boy’s death.
But Ferguson — the only one charged with murder — killed himself while jailed. Prosecutors have since accused Nunez, who is charged with child abuse resulting in death, of dealing the fatal blow.
They say they’re negotiating a plea deal with the boy’s mother.
Nunez’s attorney says he feared his father, which spurred him to participate in the abuse.
