Tri-State Literacy Council receives service award
CHARLESTON — Tri-State Literacy Council volunteers provide free literacy services to adults in Cabell County and the surrounding areas.
On Thursday, Sept. 6, the Tri-State Literacy Council was honored for their dedication to service at the annual Governor’s Service Awards dinner at the Culture Center at the State Capitol.
Presented since 1995, the Governor’s Service Awards honors individuals, families and organizations that exemplify outstanding dedication to volunteerism and community service in West Virginia. The Tri-State Literacy Council received their award in the Organization Category.
Tri-State Literacy Council volunteer tutors hit the streets in high poverty areas to meet people where they are at. Volunteers can be found in recovery shelters, community centers, local nonprofits, and if transportation is a problem — volunteers can even meet their clients by phone.
The program welcomes learners at all literacy levels, whether they are learning the alphabet, honing their skills for a GED, or learning English as a second language.
In 2018, 68 volunteer tutors served 76 adult learners. Thanks to the help of the volunteer tutors, every adult learner in the program reached at least one of their goals — including receiving their high school equivalency.
A volunteer review committee reads and selects the recipients based on achievement, community needs, continuing involvement, innovation and impact of service.
Other recipients of the 2018 Governor’s Service Awards include, by category: Youth: Kiara Stevens from Wellsburg, Adult: Melodee B. Price from Elkins, Kandi Habeb from Parkersburg, Senior: Jo Ann Harman from Lahmansville, Kenneth Springer from Hillsboro, Family: The Ash Family from Clarksburg, Lifetime Achievement: Paula Osborne from Berkeley Springs, Organization: Tri-State Literacy Council from Huntington, Faith In Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley from Charleston and Elkins, Welcome Depot Center from Elkins, Rotary Clubs of Martinsburg and Shepherdstown.
