Saints Waive 4 Players, Claim 4
NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ A day after the New Orleans Saints made mandatory cuts to bring the roster down to 53 players, the team continued shuffling its lineup Monday.
The Saints waived defensive end Uhuru Hamiter, defensive tackle Robert Newkirk, wide receiver Ryan Thelwell and safety Gerald Vaughn, team spokesman Greg Bensel said.
The team claimed defensive tackle Martin Chase, defensive end Marques Douglas, cornerback Todd Franz and running back Jerald Moore off waivers.
Chase, 6-foot-2 and 310 pounds, was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens with its first pick in the fifth round of the 1998 NFL draft. He saw limited action in 1999, making two tackles.
Douglas, 6-2, 270, signed with the Baltimore Ravens as a free agent in 1999 and spent 14 of 16 games on the Ravens’ practice squad. He was sent to the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe last spring and finished tied for second in the league with nine sacks. He also had 21 tackles and two forced fumbles to help Rhein win the World Bowl.
Franz, 6-0, 194, was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round of this year’s draft. A three-year starter at Tulsa, he had 182 tackles and five interceptions.
Moore, 5-9, 230, was signed by the Oakland Raiders as a free agent in March. He did not play in 1999, spending training camp and the preseason with St. Louis. He was selected by the Rams in the third round of the 1996 NFL draft.
