SAGE GROUSE-DNA STUDY
BOISE, Idaho — Sage grouse have a vast network of mating grounds in the U.S. West akin to interconnected regional airport hubs that the imperiled species is using to maintain genetic diversity across its entire range, a DNA study has revealed. The 19-page report by the U.S. Forest Service that appeared in a scientific journal in early May involved nearly 6,000 sage grouse samples collected from 2005 to 2015 and maps of some 1,200 mating sites in 10 western states and the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. LARGE LARGMOUTH BASS
CODY — Caleb Salzman was just as open-mouthed and shocked as the Wyoming record largemouth bass he hooked. “It was crazy,” Salzman said. Weighing in at 11.51 pounds (5.2 kilograms), measuring 24.5 inches (62.2 centimeters) long and with a girth of 20.75 inches (52 centimeters), Salzman established a new Wyoming largemouth bass record. —SAGE GROUSE-JACKSON — The sage grouse population in northwest Wyoming’s Jackson Hole region has declined significantly this year. But Game and Fish Sage Grouse Program Coordinator Tom Christiansen says the declines are within the normal range of variability for sage grouse in the region.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — As a rookie last season, the Denver Broncos asked DeMarcus Walker to slim down to about 238 pounds and become more of an outside pass rushing threat. This season, he’s beefed back up to 280 to play inside. He feels this should tip the scales back in his favor. By Pat Graham. UPCOMING: 550 words, photos by 6 p.m. EDT.
CINCINNATI — The Reds and Rockies open a three-game series. Sal Romano (3-6) faces left-hander Kyle Freeland (5-5). By Joe Kay. Game starts at 7:10 p.m.
