January 14, 2000

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) _ Cat Thief, third in the Malibu Stakes last month at Santa Anita, returns to action Saturday in the $300,000 San Fernando Breeders’ Cup Stakes at 1 1-16 miles.

Cat Thief came off from his victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November at Gulfstream Park to finish third in the seven-furlong Malibu, a half-length behind victorious Love That Red.

``The rest of the year is all two-turn races for him, and that should serve him well,″ trainer D. Wayne Lukas said after the Malibu.

Cat Thief will carry co-high weight of 122 pounds under Pat Day and break from post position No. 3. The horse has earned more than $3.4 million, with four wins in 20 career starts.

His challengers include General Challenge, who won the Native Diver Handicap on Dec. 12 at Hollywood Park when ridden for the first time by Chris McCarron; and Straight Man, who was second to Love That Red by a neck in the Malibu.

The San Fernando field, in post position order with jockeys and weights: Straight Man, David Flores, 116 pounds; Casey Griffin, Alex Solis, 116; Cat Thief, Day, 122; Saint’s Honor, Kent Desormeaux, 116; General Challenge, McCarron, 122; Mr. Broad Blade, Patrick Valenzuela, 116; and Cliquot, Corey Nakatani, 122.
