Jockey Chris Antley Found Dead

December 3, 2000

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) _ Jockey Chris Antley, who rode Charismatic to victory in the 1999 Kentucky Derby and just missed winning the Triple Crown, has been found dead. He was 34.

Antley was found in his Pasadena home by a family friend at 11 p.m. Saturday, police Sgt. John Dewar said Sunday.

``He was pronounced dead at the scene, having suffered trauma to the head,″ Dewar said.

Dewar said detectives remained at the scene, but he had no other details.

Antley retired this year after a career that also included a victory in the 1991 Kentucky Derby aboard Strike the Gold.

He rode Charismatic to wins in last year’s Derby and Preakness Stakes before the colt broke his leg in the Belmont, denying Antley a Triple Crown victory.

Antley, who was from Elloree, S.C., had battled weight problems his entire riding career. He also overcame drug problems that interrupted his career in the early 1990s.
