Woman boxer seriously hurt in bout
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) _ Katherine Dallam remained hospitalized today with injuries from a boxing match Wednesday night.
Dallam underwent surgery Thursday at Heartland Regional Medical Center and was listed in guarded condition Friday. The hospital declined to provide further information today on her injuries or condition.
Other than a bloody nose, there was no sign that Dallam was in bad shape during her bout with Sumya Anani. But afterwards, she lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Anani, a boxer as well as a massage therapist and yoga instructor, won the undercard match against Dallam, an alcohol abuse counselor and former kick boxer, at the Firefighters Union Hall in St. Joseph.
``We both stepped in the ring,″ Anani said. ``We both made the choice and tapped gloves in the middle of the ring.″
Danny Campbell, president of Technical Knock-Out Promotions, said he had spoken with Anani about the fight.
``I told her, she can’t feel responsible,″ Campbell said. ``It was just one of those freak things that happen in the sport.″
