Schalken Defeated in Estoril Open
OEIRAS, Portugal (AP) _ Third-seeded Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands lost 6-3, 6-2 Wednesday to Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko, leaving the Estoril Open without its top three seeded players after the first round.
Top-seeded Jiri Novak was beaten Monday and second-seeded Rainer Schuettler lost Tuesday.
Among the women, top-seeded Katarina Srebotnik of Slovakia beat Arantxa Parra of Spain 6-4, 6-4, and Ludmila Cervanova of Slovakia downed eighth-seeded Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-2.
In the men’s field, fourth-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Chile downed Jose Acasuso of Argentina 6-1, 6-3, fifth-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain won 6-3, 6-1 over qualifier Harel Levy of Israel and sixth-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia routed Irakli Labadze of Georgia 6-1, 6-0.
Eighth-seeded Jarkko Nieminen of Finland was eliminated 6-3, 6-4 by Agustin Calleri of Argentina.
