Residents try their hand at popular social game

September 21, 2018

At Holly Hall Retirement Community, residents strive to remain active and social on a day-to-day basis. The staff and residents work together to ensure that each individual living at Holly Hall has the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities that are of interest to them.

Recently, two dedicated board members have volunteered their time to teach a group of interested residents the popular game of mah-jongg. The exciting game of mah-jongg has existed in various forms for ages. It is thought-provoking, exciting and encourages the cognitive processes of the brain.

Mah-jongg groups and tournaments are popular throughout Houston and the country.

Interest in the game was sparked by Holly Hall’s annual fundraiser, Games People Play, during which residents and community members alike purchase a ticket to spend a day playing fun games such as mah-jongg, bridge, Scrabble and dominoes while raising funds for much needed programing. At the 2017 Games People Play event, a small group of just four residents joined in with a board member who gave lessons. This group now meets monthly and more residents join each month. Residents have even changed the time of a monthly meeting to accommodate the availability of board member volunteers.

The annual Games People Play event, scheduled for Oct. 15, raises funds needed to provide expanded wellness programs for residents. Thanks to the help of the local gaming community, residents have many options for physical exercise including yoga, tai chi and Zumba Gold. These new activities not only provide residents with options when it comes to wellness, but also exposure to new ways they can improve their balance and strength.

Holly Hall is dedicated to making sure that each resident leads a happy and meaningful life physically, mentally and socially. For more information on Games People Play or Holly Hall’s volunteer program, visit www.hollyhall.org or call 281-936-2850.
