February 1, 2019

Winter weather alters basketball schedule Weather once again has impacted the Wyoming Valley Conference girls basketball schedule. All games scheduled for Thursday night were postponed. Here are the makeup dates: Nanticoke Area will play at Berwick tonight. On Saturday afternoon, Pittston Area will play at Coughlin at 1. Valley West travels to Hazleton Area for a start time of 2. On Feb. 9, Lake-Lehman will play at Wyoming Area at 1. Three games were changed to Feb. 11 with Crestwood at Dallas, Meyers at Wyoming Seminary and MMI Prep at GAR. Tunkhannock plays at Holy Redeemer on Feb. 12, while Northwest visits Hanover Area on Feb. 14. Matthews 5 back after first round in Bogota A pair of eagles and a strong finish helped Brandon Matthews fire a 4-under-par 67 on the Founders course in Thursday’s opening round of the Country Club de Bogota Championship on the Web.com Tour. The Dupont native had a solid start on his first nine, the back nine of the Founders layout, the harder of the two courses being played this week. Matthews made an eagle-2 on the 389-yard, par-4 14th hole and followed it with a birdie on No. 18 to reach 3-under at the turn. The 24-year-old double-bogeyed the par-4 first and then added a bogey on No. 4 to come back to even par. But a birdie-birdie-eagle burst on Nos. 6-8, the last a par 5, put Matthews in a tie for 16th after the opening round. His 67 was the second-lowest round of the day on the Founders layout. Matthews is five shots behind leader Xinjun Zhang, who shot a 9-under 61 on the Pacos and Fabios course. Players change courses for today’s second round. Matthews will tee off at 8:50 a.m. — STAFF REPORTS
