Fire kills 12 in firecracker factory in India
KOLKATA, India (AP) — A blaze in a firecracker factory killed 12 people and seriously injured five others in eastern India, police said Thursday.
The fire broke out Wednesday night in West Midnapore District of West Bengal state, police officer Bharati Ghosh said.
He said the owner had been arrested for running the factory without a proper license.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire in the factory nearly 150 kilometers (85 miles) southwest of Kolkata, the state capital.
India has a huge demand for firecrackers, which are used in religious festivals and weddings. Fires are common in the factories in the absence of proper safety standards.
