Fantasy Football: Week 5 WR rankings

October 5, 2018

Only the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers have surrendered more yards to opposing wide receivers than the Philadelphia Eagles’ 836. Throw in the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers, and you’ve found every defense that’s allowed more touchdowns to the position than the six ceded by the reigning champs.

There’s been plenty of discussion about Philly’s next opponent, the Minnesota Vikings’ surprisingly susceptible pass ‘D.’ But Jim Schwartz’s group is having its share of issues, too. The Titans’ Corey Davis-Marcus Mariota connection combined for 9-161-1 receiving, including the OT dagger, vs. Philly Sunday. With Minnesota having an even harder time running the football than Tennessee, its chances of spurring an upset at Lincoln Financial Field could hinge on Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs again delivering huge performances — which feels more likely than the Vikings’ pass ‘D’ suddenly steadying.

Thielen was limited by the Eagles and then-slot CB Patrick Robinson to 28 receiving yards on three catches in the NFC title game in January, while Diggs finished with 8-70. In addition to no longer having Robinson, the Eagles will be without S Rodney McLeod, whose absence loomed large in Week 4, when backups Corey Graham and Avonte Maddox were exposed over the middle.

Thielen and Diggs, WR4 and WR14 respectively through four weeks, already have been great, including last Thursday in the shootout loss in L.A. On the opposite coast, they might have to do even more to help pull Minnesota off the mat. We’re not predicting an upset, but we expect this pair to again do its part.
