Smoked fish seller carries on after prison

August 25, 2018

Follow the signs for smoked fish, and you’ll find your way to Walters Fisheries at 4728 W. Sixth St. in Ludington, where Great Lakes fish is smoked and sold on-site.

It’s the old-fashioned honor system. Customers simply slip $20 through a slot in the door and choose a box of hickory smoked Lake Huron lake trout, king salmon or Lake Superior white fish from the refrigerator.

Some customers are first-timers who just follow the signs, and some have been coming since they were kids.

Jordan Rinkevicz is originally from Scottville, but he now lives in Florida. Every time he returns to Mason County for a family get-together, he buys fish from Walters Fisheries.

“I have to stop and get a box of salmon,” Rinkevicz said. “It’s got good flavor, it’s a good product and it’s always there. I got to have my Michigan salmon every time I come up here.”
