Authorities: Youth travel baseball team chief stole funds
MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say the manager and treasurer of a youth travel baseball team in New Jersey stole $6,500 from the organization.
Manchester police say 52-year-old township resident Michael Walters is charged with theft by deception and issuing a bad check. It wasn’t known Friday if he’s retained an attorney.
Authorities say that coaches and team representatives for the age 10 and under team reported the suspected theft to police on Wednesday after learning Walters didn’t pay the winner of a fundraiser. Officials say the money Walters allegedly stole was earmarked for equipment purchases and to pay entry fees for tournaments.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
