Washington Bridge construction project set to begin
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island transportation officials will begin work on the Washington Bridge Monday.
Rhode Island Department of Transportation Director Peter Alviti tells WPRI-TV the project will cost about $22.3 million and should be finished by fall 2020. Alviti says the westbound side of the bridge is “structurally deficient.”
The Gano Street off-ramp will be closed will be closed through fall 2019. Drivers will be able to use multiple detours.
The Washington Bridge was built in 1969. According to Alviti, about 70,000 vehicles use the bridge each day.
RIDOT says the state is working on over $900 million worth of construction this year.
