Police Officers Sickened by Food Poisoning at City Summit

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) _ Nearly 140 policemen providing security during a U.N. summit on cities got food poisoning Tuesday from a catered meal.

Alpay Demir, a policeman who fell ill, said he believed the meatball sandwich served for lunch was not fresh.

A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said 138 officers became ill.

Gokhan Mutluay, the chief of catering services for the U.N. conference on cities, said the French company Sodexho which has been providing meals during the 12-day summit was notified of the problem.

A police team also went to Sodexho’s office in a suburban district to inspect the company’s kitchen, Mutluay said.

Sodexho serves meals to 4,000 police officers and 1,800 staff members every day. The Turkish government pays the company about $17,400 daily for the service.
