Construction is nearly complete on Lee County jail

August 4, 2019

DIXON, Ill. (AP) — Crews are putting the final touches on 41,000-square-foot law enforcement center in Lee County that includes a 96-bed jail.

Sauk Valley Media reports that construction is about 90 percent complete and inmates could move in as early as October. Reporters were given a preview of the facility last week.

The old jail was built in 1970 and is deteriorating.

Officials are touting the new facility’s security features, saying there are enough cells to separate different types of inmates and meet medical needs. There will also be space to house female inmates, as well as for a library.

Authorities say the facility is on track to stay under the $18.5 million budget cap set by the Lee County Board.
