Video: No resistance to Nigerian extremist attack
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — A new video issued by the Boko Haram terrorist network shows extremists shooting confidently in the Nigerian army’s main barracks in northeastern Nigeria and meeting no resistance during a raid earlier this month.
The Nigerian military had reported killing scores of militants to repel a March 14 assault on Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. But the video, delivered Monday through the same channels as previous Boko Haram messages, showed a different picture.
It showed Islamic extremists breaking into a notorious detention center in the barracks and freeing hundreds, including militants. In a filmed speech Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau claims to have freed 2,000 fighters. He says the people the military killed were wrongfully detained civilians.
Boko Haram often uses videos as claims of responsibility for attacks.
