S. Carolina 19, Navy 8
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ Freshman Antonio Walker scored on a blocked punt and Collin Mackie kicked four field goals as South Carolina defeated Navy 19-8 Saturday.
The Gamecocks, 8-2, coming off an embarrassing 59-0 loss to No. 5 Florida State, were listless on offense against outmanned and injury-plagued Navy.
Instead, it was left to the defense to not only stop the Midshipmen, 3-7, but to score South Carolina’s only touchdown.
With the ball at the Navy 33, Walker broke through to block Jefferson Triplett’s punt. The seldom-used defensive back then picked the ball up at the Navy 6 and carried it in for the TD, giving the Gamecocks a 10-0 lead with 5:29 left in the second period.
Mackie kicked a 34-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining in the half, increasing the Gamecocks’ lead to 13-0. The sophomore had kicked a 39-yard field goal with 40 seconds left in the first period.
Mackie now has 42 career field goals, breaking the school record of 39 set by Mark Fleetwood from 1981 to 1983.
The victory probably will get the Gamecocks a bid to the Liberty Bowl against Indiana. Bowl bids go out next week.
