Pregame notes from blustery Memorial Stadium: Spielman not in uniform during warmups
Good morning from Memorial Stadium, where the flags above the north end zone are currently being whipped by a big North wind.
*** Nebraska will apparently be without one of its biggest offensive weapons against Michigan State. JD Spielman watched warmups with a big overcoat on and is not in uniform.
The dangerous slot man was hurt on a third-quarter punt return last week against Illinois when he appeared to have his left foot pinned beneath a tackler.
Spielman has started all 10 games this fall and has a team-best 66 catches for 810 yards and eight touchdowns. He had at least 61 receiving yards in seven straight games and ranked among the Big Ten leaders in most receiving categories.
*** Sophomore quarterback Noah Vedral, who coach Scott Frost has said would be the team’s No. 2 quarterback if freshman Adrian Martinez were to go down, is not warming up with the other quarterbacks in pregame drills. No word on if he’s hurt or what. That’ll be a question after the game.
*** Watching early warmups from the specialists and receivers, the wind is going to have a real effect today for Nebraska and Michigan State. Punting North to South, every punter turned over high, spiraling punts of 55-60 yards or more and, going the other way, struggled to get any depth.
The stadium thermometer shows 28 degrees and winds between 10-15 miles per hour, but that’s on the field level. Anything up in the air is going to be impacted.
