Scam reported in Holt County

December 20, 2018

O’NEILL — On Tuesday afternoon, the Holt County Sheriff’s Office reported that it received notification of a telephone scam from a citizen.

Sheriff Ben Matchett said the scam involved an individual falsely posing as a Sergeant with the Holt County Sheriff’s Office. The scammer claimed the citizen had missed a court date and jury duty in Holt County.

The scammer then wanted the citizen to get a prepaid card and give them the number off the back of the card. The scammer then instructed the citizen to take the card to the sheriff’s office to be reimbursed for the fines.

Matchett said the scammer used a spoof program to have 402-336-2850, the Holt County Sheriff’s Office number, to appear as the caller. Another number used by the scammer is 402-316-2876 and falsely claims to be the Holt County Sheriff’s Warrant Division.

Matchett wants to warn the public about this deceptive scam. If an individual were to miss a court date or jury duty, they would be notified by the respective courts.

Sheriff’s offices, or any law enforcement agency, will never call requesting credit card information or ask for information from the back of a credit card. Fines and costs are paid directly to the courts and not through the sheriff’s office, he said.
