Wayne Central advances to state semifinals
NITRO — The Wayne Central 8-10 all star team pulled past two teams over the weekend bringing them one step closer to a state championship.
Coach Shane Napier said it is an exciting time for the girls.
“There are a few girls on the team who have played on successful teams before, and its great to see them continue success but there are also girls who have never advanced this far, and to see them get the privilege is also great,” Napier said.
In game one, Wayne Central beat St. Albans 8-7 in a nail biting six innings. At one point in the game, Wayne was behind 5-2 and fresh pitcher Aubrey Napier came in to replace Kaliah Merritt and pull Wayne from the loss and pull momentum to the team’s side.
The win came after Kylee Copley was walked and pinch runner Rylee Carrico stole home all the way from first base on three passed balls. Fallon Stephens and Aubrey Dillon both knocked inside the park homer uns to help garner the win.
In the second game of the weekend, Wayne blew past Grant County with a 24-0 win in the third inning on the mercy rule.
Wayne put up 15 runs in the first inning, followed by 4 more and 5 more in the innings to follow.
Both Merritt and Napier pitched against Grant as well, with Merritt earning the wins on the mound.
Merritt and Lauryn Sanders also snagged inside the park grand slams in the blow out game.
Napier said the best advice he could give the girls is to not get caught up in the moment.
“Throughout the whole process I have preached the fact that girls always have more games to play to get the title,” he said. “It’s exciting to get this far, you can’t get caught up in the moment because there is more to be done for the prize.”
The team played Summersville in the state semi-finals, and the winner moves on to play this evening.
