DC Archbishop Loses Consciousness

March 7, 2002

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Cardinal Theodore F. McCarrick, the Roman Catholic archbishop of Washington, temporarily lost consciousness Wednesday night after giving blood earlier in the day, a spokeswoman said.

The 71-year-old McCarrick regained consciousness quickly, said Susan Gibbs, a spokeswoman for the Archdiocese of Washington.

The cardinal was at a private party in Northwest Washington when he passed out before dinner. He was taken to a hospital, where he was given a checkup before being released.

McCarrick periodically gives blood, and did so Wednesday at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Md., a Washington suburb, Gibbs said. It was about eight hours later that he passed out. McCarrick had a busy day and hadn’t eaten much, the spokeswoman said.

The cardinal marked his one-year anniversary in January as the head of 140 parishes in Washington and five southeastern Maryland counties.

Before that, he was head of the Newark, N.J., archdiocese.
