Northern Minnesota man jailed in fatal stabbing of his mother

A northern Minnesota man accused of fatally stabbing his mother is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Thomas W. Matthews, 34, is suspected of killing 54-year-old Joy M. Matthews on Tuesday at a home in Bena, according to the Cass County Sheriffs Office.

Matthews, of Bena, remains jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail on assault charges stemming from a fight with patrons outside the Big Winnie Bar in Bena, the Sheriffs Office added.

According to the Cass County Sheriffs Office:

Deputies were called to the bar shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday and saw Thomas Matthews being restrained by several people after he attacked some of the patrons.

About 6:20 a.m. the next morning, authorities were alerted to a woman who was unresponsive at a home in Bena. Emergency responders went to the home and found Joy Matthews body.

Authorities have yet to reveal a motive in the killing or why Thomas Matthews was fighting at the bar. Charges in the killing are pending.
