Retailers offer opportunities for seasonal employment

For people who are either off for a holiday break, just looking for a side job to earn some extra cash for the holiday season, or even looking to get some experience, a seasonal job in retail could be a perfect opportunity to try part-time work with a shorter commitment.

One such opportunity is at Macy’s, which has locations throughout greater Houston. Although it hasn’t yet announced a number of positions that will be available in Houston, Macy’s will hire full-time and part-time sales associates and offers a competitive wage as well as the employee discount as an added perk.

Seasonal colleagues at Macy’s stores serve customers on the selling floor and work in store operations positions, including fulfilling online purchase in-store pick-up orders as well as online ship-to-store orders. Candidates should apply in advance at macysJOBS.com to view open positions and opportunities for on-site interviews. Candidates who are unable to attend a hiring event or interview on location can complete the interview process over the phone.

“Seasonal hires help enhance our customers’ shopping experiences during holiday season,” said Lauren Vocelle, manager of media relations, south region, Macy’s Inc. “These colleagues provide service on the selling floor, serve store operations’ needs, and fulfill orders for customers who buy online or via mobile.”

Another option for seasonal employment within the retail industry is at Target stores.

Although it hasn’t yet announced the number of holiday positions available, Target has made an investment in its team by committing to raising the minimum hourly wage to $12 for all team members across the country by the end of the year, and to $15 by the end of 2020.

Seasonal team members have the opportunity to fill a number of different roles across stores, distribution centers and fulfillment facilities. Target store team members provide guest service, help stock the latest holiday toys and decorations, and work with guests to identify the perfect gifts. Team members at Target’s distribution and fulfillment centers process freight to stores and fulfill the Target.com orders, including receiving, picking and loading to ensure products reach guests quickly.

“As we prepare for the holiday season each year, we offer extra hours to our regular year-round team members and hire additional seasonal employees to ensure we’re fully staffed across our more than 1,800 stores,” said Angie Thompson, a Target spokesperson. “In large cities like Houston, we often hire approximately 1,000 to 2,000 seasonal team members.”
