Rob ’N Gin wins Jersey Derby
CHERRY HILL, N.J. (AP) _ Rob ’N Gin, a 3-5 favorite ridden by Jerry Bailey, set a track record in wining the 54th running of the $150,000 Jersey Derby on Friday night at Garden State Park.
Rob ’N Gin took the lead entering the stretch in the turf race for 3-year-olds and warded off a challenge from Tekken, an Irish-bred.
Tekken made a great effort in the deep stretch and almost drew even, but Bailey was able to urge Rob ’N Gin on to a half-length victory in record time of 1:40.4. That broke the record of 1:41.3 set by Double Feint on June 7, 1966.
The victory was worth $90,000 to owners Joseph Greeley and Nancy and Robert Kelly and the lifetime earnings of Rob ’N Gin improved to $229,059.
Rob ’N Gin paid $3.40, $2.80, $2.60. Tekken paid $9 and $5.60, while Keep it Strait was third and paid $4 to show.
