Bush Throws College W. Series Pitch
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ President Bush’s pitch reached home plate this time.
His opening pitch at the College World Series on Friday even appeared to be a strike as Stanford catcher Ryan Garko barely moved his glove. The Cardinal played Tulane in the opener.
It was a big improvement from Bush’s last attempt at a first pitch on the major leagues’ opening day in April. That pitch at Milwaukee’s Miller Park included a flamboyant windup and ended up in the dirt before it thumped into the catcher’s mitt.
Bush’s windup Friday at Rosenblatt Stadium was a bit more conservative and his delivery much stronger.
The pitch received a standing ovation. Before his windup, sections of the nearly full-house crowd of 25,000 took turns chanting ``George″ and ``W.″
Before the pitch, Bush, a lifelong fan of the game and former managing partner of the Texas Rangers, met with the eight teams in the series.
