DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) _ Here is a thumbnail sketch of Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin, who won the Iowa Democratic presidential caucuses Monday night:
BORN: Nov. 19, 1939, in Cumming, Iowa, to coal miner Patrick Harkin and Frances Harkin.
EDUCATION: Graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in government and economics in 1962. Law degree from Catholic University of America in 1972. Worked his way through school.
CAREER: Served as aide to U.S. Rep. Neal Smith, D-Iowa. Lawyer for Polk County Legal Aid Society. Elected to U.S. House in 1974 and served 10 years. Elected to Senate in 1984 and re-elected in 1990.
MILITARY SERVICE: Served in the Navy from 1962-67, stationed in Cuba and Japan, from which he flew cargo missions into Vietnam. Naval Reserve, 1968-1974.
PERSONAL: Married to Ruth Raduenz Harkin for 23 years. Two daughters, Amy, 15, Jennifer, 9. Ruth Harkin is an attorney affiliated with a Washington law firm. Harkin is Catholic.
