MILAN, Italy (AP) _ Italian police said Monday that a fire set inside a central Milan subway station near a pro-Islam banner nearby this weekend did not appear to be linked to international terrorism.

No one was injured after a cooking gas canister was set afire late Saturday night at the Duomo stop near Milan’s famed cathedral. Police found a banner nearby with slogans in Italian and Arabic praising the ``cause of Allah.″

Despite initial fears raised by the fire, Milan Police Superintendent Vincenzo Boncoraio said Monday that the investigation did not appear to point toward a major foreign terror group.

``We are not afraid of any subversive terrorism of a significant, international degree,″ he said.

He gave no further details on the investigation.

Italy has been on high alert for possible attacks since the Sept. 11 strikes in the United States.
