Area students take home prizes at State Fair
LEWISBURG, W.Va. — The West Virginia State Fair Junior Livestock Show this year featured several Putnam County FFA and 4-H students.
Jamie Irvine, Mandi Smith, Austin Ervin, Lainey Smith and Brooke Welch represented Buffalo FFA and Putnam 4-H.
Jamie, a senior at Buffalo; Mandi, a sophomore at West Virginia University; and Lainey, a junior at WVU, all showed market goats with successful class placings and Lainey placed fifth in Senior Showmanship. Austin, a sophomore at Buffalo, showed a market lamb and was 13th in his class.
Brooke, a senior at Hurricane High, showed a yearling bred heifer and two spring breeding heifers and was second, fourth, and fifth in class placings and seventh overall in Senior Showmanship.
The five-day event supervised by WVU Extension Faculty includes youth activities in showmanship, market classes and skilla-thon competitions, and is an avenue for youth to sell their market animals at auction. In addition, this year, a skeet shooting competition was offered for the youth and Putnam competitors Mandi Smith, Austin Ervin, and Lainey Smith participated.
The Putnam youths are very appreciative of The Greenbrier resort, which purchased all the animals that were sold by the these Putnam Country students.
