Estranged Husband Goes on Rampage, Kills Three, Wounds Three Others

July 12, 1991

CHINA GROVE, N.C. (AP) _ One day after his wife left him, her husband killed her and both their fathers in a series of shootings that also wounded his wife’s stepmother, a hostage and a sheriff’s deputy, police said.

The nightlong rampage ended early Thursday when the gunman, Jacob Deal, 30, of China Grove, was hit in a shootout with authorities. Deal was hospitalized in critical condition.

His wife, Pam Deal, 30, had left him Tuesday and moved into her parents’ home.

On Wednesday, Deal shot his father, then took two female hostages, county Sheriff Bob Martin said. He then went to his in-laws’ home, killing his wife, her father and wounding his wife’s stepmother, the sheriff said.

Deal released the two hostages sometime before the shootout with law officers erupted early the next morning. A deputy was hit in the eye with flying glass.

Deal then commandeered a truck and took its driver hostage, who was wounded in a struggle for Deal’s gun, Martin said.

The gunman then pushed the hostage out of the truck and started shooting at officers again. He was wounded when officers returned fire.

Deal faces three murder charges and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, Martin said.
