Galatasaray Defeats Real Madrid
MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) _ Galatasaray followed up its European Cup title by beating Champions Cup winner Real Madrid 2-1 in the Super Cup on Friday behind two goals by Jardel.
Jardel, Galatasaray’s new Brazilian striker, scored the game-winner in the 103rd minute after the teams played to a 1-1 tie after 90 minutes.
Galatasaray, which became the first Turkish club to capture a major European title when it won the UEFA Cup in May, went ahead in the 41st minute when Jardel converted a penalty kick.
Raul Gonzales, whose missed penalty against France cost Spain a place in the semifinals in the European Championships, scored on a penalty kick in the 78th minute to tie it.
