Prosecutor: Man gets 13 years in good Samaritan’s death
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Prosecutors say a New Jersey man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison in the death of a good Samaritan who tried to help a woman he was assaulting at a bus stop.
The Atlantic County prosecutor’s office said Monday that 24-year-old Calvin Wiggins was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty earlier to aggravated manslaughter.
Prosecutors said 54-year-old John Charlton was driving by when he saw the assault and tried to stop it but was punched by Wiggins and hit his head on the roadway. He died 10 days later. Wiggins was taken to prison on a robbery parole violation.
Judge Donna Taylor denied a defense request to have the 13-year sentence run concurrently with the robbery term, which corrections records indicate will end sometime between November and mid-August 2019.
