The Washington Nationals set a team record for runs as Daniel Murphy slammed a pair of homers and had six RBIs in a 25-4 thrashing of the New York Mets. Anthony Rendon drove in four runs and pitcher Tanner Roark delivered a three-run double for the Nats, who also had home runs from Ryan Zimmerman, Matt Adams and Mark Reynolds. Infielder Jose Reyes was torched for two homers and six runs in the eighth to complete Washington’s 26-hit attack.
New York Yankees southpaw J.A. Happ has been diagnosed with hand, foot and mouth disease. General Manager Brian Cashman says Happ’s case appears to be mild, and that he still might be able to make his scheduled start Saturday at Boston.
Serena Williams was handed the most lopsided loss of her career yesterday. The 23-time Grand Slam champion was dominated by Johanna Konta, 6-1, 6-0. Williams won her serve in the opening game before an array of double-faults and missed drop shots cost her in the 52-minute match. Her previous worst defeat was 6-0, 6-2 to Simona Halep in the 2014 WTA finals in Singapore.
It’s Johnny Manziel time in the Candian Football League! Manziel will make his first start in the league Friday night after sitting on the bench as a backup for six games, Montreal Alouettes coach Mike Sherman told ESPN yesterday. Manziel will face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who traded the quarterback on July 22 for a package that included two first-round draft choices. He didn’t play in the Alouettes’ game last Thursday, their first game after the trade. He played in two preseason games for the Tiger-Cats, as well as parts of two games for the Spring League in April. But Friday night’s game will be his most substantial football outing since the Cleveland Browns released him following the 2015 season.
The Boston Red Sox have put ace Chris Sale on the disabled list with left shoulder inflammation, leaving them without their top pitcher for the upcoming series against the New York Yankees. Sale is leading the majors with 204 strikeouts and owns a major league-leading 2.04 ERA. The lefty is 5-0 in his last six starts and hasn’t given up a run in his last three outings.
