Reds’ Aaron Boone Struck by Pitch
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Cincinnati’s Aaron Boone was struck in the face Tuesday night by a pitch while batting in the seventh inning and was taken to the hospital.
Boone fell to the ground in pain after being hit by the pitch from San Francisco’s Russ Ortiz as teammates and trainers rushed to tend to him. He appeared to be bleeding from the nose.
Players from both sides and the crowd at Pacific Bell Park watched in hushed silence as he lay face down on the ground. After several minutes, he was helped to his feet and the crowd gave him a warm round of applause.
Boone then walked off the field with help from trainers, a towel wrapped around his face.
The Reds third baseman was taken to St. Francis Hospital for precautionary tests and X-rays.
Ortiz was lifted in favor of Felix Rodriguez, and Juan Castro went in as a pinch-runner for Boone.
