Trial of teen accused of killing math teacher nearing end
SALEM, Mass. (AP) — The trial of a Massachusetts teenager charged with raping and killing his high school math teacher is winding down.
Closing arguments are scheduled Monday in the trial of Philip Chism, who is charged with murder in the 2013 death of Danvers High School teacher Colleen Ritzer.
Chism was 14 when Ritzer was killed. During the trial, jurors watched chilling video from surveillance cameras at the school that showed Chism following Ritzer into a bathroom, wearing a hood and putting on gloves. Her body was later found in woods near the school.
Chism’s lawyers admitted he killed Ritzer, but said he is severely mentally ill and was in the midst of a psychotic episode the day she was killed.
The now 16-year-old Chism is being tried as an adult.
