New Bedford Fishermen Haul in $143 Million in 1987
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) _ Fishermen in New Bedford hauled in $143.7 million worth of scallops and fish last year, which virtually locks the city’s title as the most lucrative U.S. fishing port, officials said Friday.
The catch of 76.3 million pounds is expected to be the most valuable in the nation for the fifth straight year, said Jay Tebeau of the National Marine Fisheries Service. The value of the 1987 catch was a 26 percent increase over 1986.
The service annually ranks about 60 U.S. ports according to dollar value and pounds of seafood. Figures for other ports will not be available for weeks, but Tebeau said, ″It’s a sure bet that New Bedford will come in tops as far as value is concerned.″
