Utah 57, Brigham Young 28
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ Scott Mitchell set two NCAA passing records and Eddie Johnson rushed for four touchdowns to lead Utah to a 57-28 victory over Western Athletic Conference arch-rival Brigham Young, its first in a decade.
Mitchell, a 6-foot-5 left-handed sophomore, finished the season with 533 passing attempts, topping BYU quarterback Robbie Bosco’s 1985 record of 511 attempts. He also broke former Cougar Jim McMahon’s 1980 record of 380.9 yards passing per game with 392.9.
Johnson, a senior running back, tied former Ute Del Rodgers’ 1980 record for touchdowns in a game with runs of 2, 3, 2 and 7 yards. He carried 26 times for 112 yards.
Utah’s fourth straight win snapped a nine-game BYU winning streak and marked the sixth time this season the Utes have scored more than 40 points a game. The win also was the Utes’ highest scoring against BYU in their 92-year rivalry, beating the 1949 top of 49 points.
Mitchell, who completed 31 of 30 passes for 384 yards, passed for three touchdowns, two to Dennis Smith and one to Carl Harry.
Plagued by five interceptions and three lost fumbles, Brigham Young scored on runs of 2 and 8 yards by Matt Bellini and Ty Detmer’s TD passes of 22 yards to Darren Handley and 41 yards to Bellini.
Utah drew first blood when Johnson’s three-yard scoring run climaxed a 73- yard drive. He set up the next TD with a 62-yard run to the Cougar 3-yard line, and two plays later scored from the 2-yard line.
Minutes later, Cougar Sean Covey’s pass was deflected and Ute defensive tackle Sam Tausinga snagged it and scored from the 17-yard line.
After Bellini’s first TD, a 48-yard pass from Mitchell to Harry set up Johnson’s 2-yard scoring run and the Utes led 27-7 at the half.
Following a 44-yard field goal by Utah’s Tim Wagstaff, Detmer connected on a 22-yard pass to Handley for a touchdown, but Utah came right back with a 21- yard scoring pass from Mitchell to Smith.
Utah scored again on Mitchell’s 16-yard pass to Harry. BYU rebounded with a 41-yard scoring pass from Detmer to Bellini.
Mitchell threw a 7-yard score to Smith and Johnson added a 7-yard TD. In between, Bellini scored with a 7-yard run.
Utah finished the season at 6-5 and 3-4, while BYU ended up 8-3 and 5-3. Brigham Young plays Colorado in the Freedom Bowl on Dec. 29 in Anaheim, Calif.
