Texas Christian 55, Eastern Kentucky 48
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) _ Unbeaten Texas Christian, led by Mark Moton’s 16 points, beat Eastern Kentucky 55-48 Sunday night to win the San Juan Shootout and hand the Colonels their first defeat.
TCU (6-0) led 32-24 at halftime and 42-30 with 12:25 left when both teams went scoreless for three minutes. John Allen broke the drought for Eastern Kentucky (4-1) with 8:45 left, pulling the Colonels to 42-32. Allen led EKU with 12 points.
But the Horned Frogs outscored the Colonels 7-3 over the next five minutes, taking a 49-35 lead on a basket by Brent Alwater.
Any chance for victory by EKU expired in the final minute when forward Jamie Ross and head coach Mike Pollio were called for technicals after arguing a charge call.
TCU’s Ken Fiedler and Junior Graves capitalized on the technicals and upped the lead to 54-43 with 44 seconds left.
TCU’s Michael Strickland was chosen the tournament’s Most Valuable Player while coach Moe Iba was picked as its top coach. Strickland scored six points in the championship game.
EKU’s Chris Brown, carried off the floor on a stretcher during Saturday night’s game against Miami, was on the bench Sunday but not in uniform.
With 12:50 remaining in the Saturday’s semifinal, the reserve junior forward fell and twisted his neck. He lay flat on his back on the court until paramedics could reach the American University of Puerto Rico campus, where the tournament was held.
Doctors at San Pablo Hospital in nearby Bayamon said Brown suffered a spasm of the deltoid muscle. He was released two hours after being admitted and spent the night at the team’s hotel.
