School Bus-Truck Collision Kills A Driver, Slight Injuries To Students

September 18, 1985

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (AP) _ A school bus picking up students collided today with a truck, killing the driver of the truck, which burst into flames, officials said.

The Portage County Sheriff’s Department said the Waupaca School District bus was turning into a driveway to pick up a student when the accident took place shortly before 7 a.m. about 15 miles southeast of Stevens Point.

A passenger in the truck was hospitalized with burns and officials said two students were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

There were conflicting reports on how many students were on the bus, which normally carries about 20 students from all grades.

Deputies at the scene said there were only five or six children on the bus and that some of them got out on their own, while the driver pulled out two others. However, Irv Baum, business manager for the Waupaca School District, said nine students were aboard the bus.
