LETTER: It’s time for America to leave Afghanistan
Why are we still in Afghanistan? It has been 17 years since we invaded Afghanistan. We will soon have kids signing up for selective service who were not even born when we invaded.
Why are we still there?
We went in to Afghanistan because the Taliban, then the ruling class of Afghanistan, refused to hand over Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon.
Osama bin Laden was killed by Seal Team Six on May 2, 2011, and this would have been the perfect opportunity to leave. The only problem was that Barack Obama didn’t see that fact. Instead, he kept us there, refusing to pay any attention to the commanders in the field, giving them half as many troops as they asked for, and generally screwing up everything he touched.
We will never have such a golden opportunity again.
I think it is time to remember why we went into Afghanistan, remember that Osama Bin Laden is no more and neither is our reason for being in Afghanistan.
It is time to leave. Leave Afghanistan to those who live there. I cannot think of one good reason for one more American to die there. - Mark Solheim, Sioux City
