Rockies, Braves try to avoid elimination...Jets defensive coordinator ill...Kings goalie hurt
DENVER (AP) — The Rockies are hoping Denver’s thin air will help them solve Milwaukee’s pitchers. If not, Colorado could be eliminated by the Brewers today in Game 3 of their NL Division Series. The Rockies have scored just six runs in four games on the road since slugging five homers in a 12-0 victory over Washington last Sunday.
ATLANTA (AP) — The Braves will try to avoid elimination by the Dodgers tonight as their series moves to Atlanta for Game 3. Atlanta manager Brian Snitker has decided to start Sean Newcomb instead of Kevin Gausman. Newcomb came within a strike of throwing a no-hitter against the Dodgers at home on July 29, and also threw two scoreless innings in relief in Game 1 on Thursday. Rookie right-hander Walker Buehler is expected to start for Los Angeles.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers isn’t with the team for its game against the Denver Broncos as he deals with what coach Todd Bowles has called a “serious” illness. Bowles is expected to call the defensive plays from the sideline. Neither Bowles nor the team has provided any details on the illness sidelining the 49-year-old Rodgers. It’s unclear when he might be able to return to work.
NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has fined Chicago Bears defensive end Akiem Hicks more than $33,000 for bumping an official in last Sunday’s win over Tampa Bay. Hicks was ejected from the game but wasn’t suspended. Among other punishments handed out, Atlanta safety Brian Poole was more than $26,000 for unnecessary roughness for a helmet-to-helmet hit against Cincinnati running back Mark Walton.
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick won’t start against the Detroit Red Wings tonight because of a lower-body injury suffered in practice yesterday. The 2012 Conn Smythe winner saved 30 of 33 shots in a 3-2 overtime loss to San Jose in the season opener on Friday. Jack Campbell will start in his place tonight.
