Man dies in fire despite neighbor, worker rescue efforts
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man has died in an apartment fire despite rescue efforts by construction workers and one of his neighbors.
The Gainesville Sun reports that the man died Monday at an apartment complex in Gainesville. Fifty-one-year-old Anthony Jackson says he lives across from the man and tried to rescue him by kicking in the door. He says two construction workers who were nearby also tried to save the man and tried to put out the fire before rescue crews arrived.
Gainesville Fire Rescue Deputy Fire Chief JoAnne Rice says crews arrived within minutes of being alerted. Rice says they entered the building through a bedroom window and found the man. The man’s identity hasn’t been released pending the notification of his next of kin. Authorities are investigating the fire’s cause.
