Simpson, Iowa 34, Wis.-Whitewater 31
WHITEWATER, Wis. (AP) _ Brad Jorgensen’s touchdown pass with 36 seconds left, his third TD pass of the game, gave Simpson a 34-31 victory over top-seeded Wisconsin-Whitewater Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Whitewater (9-1) led 21-13 at halftime, but Guy Leman scored on a one-yard run to pull second-seeded Simpson (11-0) within 21-19. Whitewater made it 28-19 after John Damato scored on a 55-yard run with 9:52 left in the third quarter.
Then Jorgensen hit Matt Kajewski on a 6-yard scoring pass to cut Whitewater’s lead to 28-26 with 4:14 left in the third period.
Bryan Mader made a 25-yard field goal, his third of the game, to put Whitewater ahead 31-26 with 4:28 left in the game.
That set the stage for Simpson’s winning drive, which covered 81 yards in seven plays. Jorgensen got the TD on a 25-yard pass to Cory Christensen, giving Simpson its first lead, 32-31, since the first quarter. Jorgensen hit Eric Short for the 2-point conversion.
Jorgensen completed 29 of 43 passes for 349 yards. Leman carried 24 times for 96 yards and two touchdowns.
For Whitewater, Damato rushed 27 times for 209 yards and two touchdowns. Ty Grovesteen completed 8 of 16 passes with one touchdown and one interception.
