Man charged in 2015 killing of South Carolina teen
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Police say a man is charged with murder in the killing of a South Carolina boy who was shot to death while walking down a street in 2015.
Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook announced charges against 28-year-old Leonard Mickens during a news conference Monday. He’s charged with murder in the death of 14-year-old Najeer Buggs in 2015.
It’s unclear whether Mickens has a defense lawyer to speak on his behalf.
Police say Buggs had been playing basketball with a cousin in July 2015 and was walking along a street when a vehicle pulled up to the youths. Both tried to run when shots rang out, but Buggs was fatally wounded.
The police chief says Buggs was an innocent victim shot by a man he describes as a “walking crime spree.”
