PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island is mailing more than 8,000 checks worth a combined $1.3 million to state residents who have unclaimed property.

Treasurer Seth Magaziner said Monday the checks are part of the state's "Your Money" program, which automatically reunites Rhode Islanders with forgotten bank accounts, uncashed paychecks or unreceived refunds.

The program matches unclaimed property lists with known addresses, which means that for thousands of people, their missing money can be returned with no paperwork required. In the past, residents had to check the state's online database to see if they had unclaimed property and then submit a claim form.

In 2017, the program matched more than 35,000 Rhode Islanders with about $10 million.
